You May Become Invisible from Eating Redcurrants

“You seem confused, Johanna. Look here, take these redcurrants.”

The Danish teacher pours up a small handful of redcurrants in her hand. The scene from the math class repeats itself in the classroom. The Other Newspaper is visiting the Zildorph Senior High School. Johanna from the 1st class is the pet of all teachers but is not particularly smart. Incessantly she is given berries by the teachers, mostly red and white redcurrants. A lot of sand is needed to raise her above the others for Johanna is really quite a small person.

Biology teacher Kioko Madsen gazes in front of him.

“Johanna is annoying, in a certain way, her critics are right. But she seems to hold some of the characteristics that society is interested in. Growth. These sorts of things. I think she will have an excellent career even if she becomes invisible. There must be some invisibility. With the way the world looks today.”

Chinese teacher Dalvad Thin disagrees.

“But Andrik Hasselmus, her classmate, will get a much happier life. A more atypical life. He picks his redcurrants himself. There is no doubt about that. He must be in love with one of the older girls. I think he’s a kind of seal now. The way he snatches the fish in the cold water. The way he gets up on the ice with a small jump.”
