Tabloid Newspaper Declines to Describe Troublemaker

382

We have been invited to an editorial meeting on the danish tabloid paper Ekstra Bladet. There is a zealous comment-field-like atmosphere where you must not laugh unless you explain exactly why. The editor-in-chief enters. An higher-ranking journalist lets the ballpoint pen dangle between two fingers and another takes a sip of coffee. The editor-in-chief whispers with a third person and places a toy car on the table. “What’s that?” It is as though the words, once spoken, refuse to go away. Silence. The editor-in-chief turns the corners of his mouth downwards and asks again. “What’s that?” A journalist raises his finger. “Thomas.” “A car?” “It’s not a real car.” “Well.”
